How much cash can you withdraw without getting flagged?

  • 4 innleggMedlem siden apr. 2026

I'm buying a used car for 180,000 kr from a private seller. He wants cash, says his bank has a 5-day limit on transfers. I took out 15,000 yesterday to test the waters, and the teller asked why I needed so much cash.

Now I'm worried about going back for the rest. She mentioned something about reporting large withdrawals. Is there a limit under which nothing happens?

How far can I go without the bank reporting me or freezing my card?

There is no legal limit in Norway on how much cash you can withdraw, and the bank will not flag your account just because you take out 180,000 kr. What you ran into is the bank's duty under the Money Laundering Act to do a risk-based check on transactions that look unusual. They don't have a number they have to report at, the way America does with 10,000 dollars.

Instead, they evaluate each transaction on its own. A woman in her late 20s taking out 165,000 kr in one go, after a 15,000 withdrawal the day before, looks odd unless you explain it. The teller asking why is not an accusation; she has to ask, and your answer decides what happens next.

Say you're buying a car from a private seller and need cash because that's how he wants to settle. That's a well-known, legitimate reason and they'll almost certainly let you take it out. The only real catch is that if the bank actually suspects criminal activity, they have to file a mistanke report to Økokrim.

But a car sale isn't that. My advice is to do it in one transaction, not dribble it out over several days, because several small withdrawals actually look worse than one explainable big one. And don't worry about them freezing your card; that doesn't happen without a real suspicion.

If the branch doesn't have that much cash on hand they'll order it in, so call ahead and tell them what you need and why. If they refuse anyway, ask for the refusal in writing and contact Finanstilsynet, because a bank can't stop a legal withdrawal without a good reason.

I was a teller for 12 years in Telemark. Our branch flagged anything over 50,000 kr for a manual check, but that's just a compliance officer glancing at it, not a report to anyone. A regular customer taking out 150,000 raised fewer questions than a new customer with 50,000. Nothing happens unless the purpose seems off.

People sell cars for cash all the time, usually because they don't want the tax office to see the sale. The bank always calls to confirm before a big withdrawal. We had a seller come in with 140,000 in 500s, and the manager called to ask where he got it.

He told the truth, they were satisfied. There's no law against withdrawing big cash in Norway, but the bank has a right to ask one question. Answer honestly, and the worst that happens is a delay.

When I bought my boat for 220,000 cash, the branch said I needed three days' notice for anything over 100,000. Had to split it over three days. Nobody asked anything, the teller knew me from the gym. The real issue isn't being flagged, it's that branches don't keep that much cash. They might have to order it in.

Withdrew 60,000 for a roof repair, and the bank called me the next morning because the transaction got flagged automatically. Explained it was for the contractor, gave them his org number, that was it. The flag goes to their own compliance department, not to Økokrim, unless it's several hundred thousand and reeks of something illegal. Bring paperwork, a written contract, anything. That makes it unremarkable.

So 15k yesterday and then the rest today, that's two withdrawals in two days, I'd probably do it all at once and just tell them flat out it's for a car. Bring the ad or a screenshot of the listing if you have it. They're not looking for excuses to report you, they're looking for a reason not to ask more questions.
